6. Westside Hole Spacing

Westside hole spacing is when the holes on the uprights are 1” (2.54 cm) apart, and the SML-2 has that. The holes are spaced 1” apart in the bench area, which allows for a more precise adjustment of the J cups and spotter arms.

The holes are 2” apart above and below the bench zone, which is standard for many squat stands, racks, and cages.

7. It Uses ⅝” Hardware

3 Drawbacks Of the Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand

1. Spotter Arms Aren’t Included

Unfortunately, the rig comes without spotter arms, which is a bummer because they are necessary to stay safe when lifting heavy.

We recommend getting a pair of spotter arms, especially if you train alone.

2. It Isn’t As Stable As a Full Squat Rack

Despite the great design and solid foundation, the SML-2 is a squat stand, which means it cannot be as stable as a full squat rack.

This isn’t the end of the world, but you should be mindful of what activities you use the stand for and how hard you rack the barbell after a set.

3. The Price

The SML-2 is cheaper than other Rogue rigs but still stings a bit. There are more affordable squat stands on the market if you’re on a tight budget. A cheaper alternative is the T-3 Series Tall Squat Stand by Titan Fitness.

As discussed previously, the SML-2 comes with 3x3” 11-gauge steel uprights and ⅝” holes, which makes it compatible with Rogue’s Monster Lite attachments. Some notable examples include:

The safety spotter arms should be your top priority if you’re on a tight budget because they will keep you safe and catch the barbell if you fail to complete a rep.

The single bar holder isn’t essential, but it can be a nice addition to your stand and offer a practical solution for storing your barbell. Plus, having some extra weight on the squat stand can make it sturdier.

Finally, we have the Rogue dip bar, which allows you to do multiple exercises. Given that the SML-2 is a squat stand, it might be a good idea to place some counterweight (a sandbag, weight plates, etc.) on the opposite side to ensure the stand won’t tip over when you suspend yourself on the dip bar.

Alternatively, attach the dip bar on the inside to ensure maximum stability. The only disadvantage is that you would have to remove the dip bar after each use because it would get in the way of your training inside the squat stand.
