A Deeper Look at the 10 Primary Benefits of the Rogue SML-2
1. Compact Frame
The Rogue SML-2 comes with a 49" by 48” (124.4 by 121.9 cm) footprint, which makes it ideal for a smaller space, such as a basement or home gym.
2. Surprisingly Stable
Despite the compact size, the SML-2 stand is surprisingly stable compared to other stands and half racks on the market. The product weighs 157 lbs (71.2 kg) and holds up well during training.
However, it’s best to weigh it down with weight plates or sandbags to do more dynamic activities, such as kipping pull-ups.
3. Sturdy and Durable
You can’t expect anything else from Rogue, but it is still worth noting:
The SML-2 is an incredibly durable and sturdy product that feels great to use. Despite costing less than other Rogue racks and stands, it possesses the same quality traits and will likely last a lifetime with proper care.
4. An Impressive Weight Capacity
The Rogue SML-2 stand is rated to support up to 1,000 lbs (454 kilograms), which is enough for even the strongest lifters.
5. No Need to Bolt it Down
The next neat benefit of the Rogue SML-2 stand is that you don’t have to bolt it to the floor, thanks to its flat design and U-shaped base. Of course, the SML-2 stand isn’t as secure as a full squat rack, but it holds its own, especially given the compact size and weight.
6. Westside Hole Spacing
Westside hole spacing is when the holes on the uprights are 1” (2.54 cm) apart, and the SML-2 has that. The holes are spaced 1” apart in the bench area, which allows for a more precise adjustment of the J cups and spotter arms.
The holes are 2” apart above and below the bench zone, which is standard for many squat stands, racks, and cages.
7. It Uses ⅝” Hardware
The SML-2 comes with ⅝” holes, which is one of the most common options. The advantage is that the squat stand is compatible with many Rogue attachments and some from other brands. We’ll share information on attachment compatibility below.
8. Pull-up Bar Included
The SML-2 comes standard with an adjustable 1.25” pull-up bar. You can set it at your preferred height and use the bar for a variety of effective exercises like:
- Pull-ups/chin-ups
- Hanging leg or knee raises
- Dead hangs
- Scapular pull-ups
- L-sits
9. Cool Design
This is more of a subjective metric but one worth mentioning. Rogue is known for making great-looking products, and the SML-2 squat stand is no different.
The standard option is an all-black design, and the stand has a rugged look that makes it a great fit in any garage or basement gym.
10. Multiple Color Options
The standard SML-2 squat stand comes in black. However, you can get the SML-2C, which is a tad more expensive. It comes with multiple color options:
- Bright blue
- Dark blue
- Bring green
- Burn orange
- Dark red
- Gun metal
- Desert tan
- Light gray
- Rogue red
- Satin black
- Satin clear
- White
3 Drawbacks Of the Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand
1. Spotter Arms Aren’t Included
Unfortunately, the rig comes without spotter arms, which is a bummer because they are necessary to stay safe when lifting heavy.
We recommend getting a pair of spotter arms, especially if you train alone.
2. It Isn’t As Stable As a Full Squat Rack
Despite the great design and solid foundation, the SML-2 is a squat stand, which means it cannot be as stable as a full squat rack.
This isn’t the end of the world, but you should be mindful of what activities you use the stand for and how hard you rack the barbell after a set.
3. The Price
The SML-2 is cheaper than other Rogue rigs but still stings a bit. There are more affordable squat stands on the market if you’re on a tight budget. A cheaper alternative is the T-3 Series Tall Squat Stand by Titan Fitness.
What’s Included In The Package
Here’s what the Rogue SML-2 squat stand package includes:
- Two heavy-duty 11-gauge 3x3" square laser-cut steel uprights
- Three 2x3” 11-gauge steel base tubes
- All necessary 5/8” bolts and fasteners
- A pair of Monster Lite J-Cups (with protective UHMW plastic inserts)
- Fat/Skinny or Single 1.25” Pull-Up Bar
Attachment Compatibility Of The Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand
As discussed previously, the SML-2 comes with 3x3” 11-gauge steel uprights and ⅝” holes, which makes it compatible with Rogue’s Monster Lite attachments. Some notable examples include:
The safety spotter arms should be your top priority if you’re on a tight budget because they will keep you safe and catch the barbell if you fail to complete a rep.
The single bar holder isn’t essential, but it can be a nice addition to your stand and offer a practical solution for storing your barbell. Plus, having some extra weight on the squat stand can make it sturdier.
Finally, we have the Rogue dip bar, which allows you to do multiple exercises. Given that the SML-2 is a squat stand, it might be a good idea to place some counterweight (a sandbag, weight plates, etc.) on the opposite side to ensure the stand won’t tip over when you suspend yourself on the dip bar.
Alternatively, attach the dip bar on the inside to ensure maximum stability. The only disadvantage is that you would have to remove the dip bar after each use because it would get in the way of your training inside the squat stand.
What Others Are Saying About The Rogue SML-2
Here are some notable reviews on the SML-2 from happy customers:
Bought this on Black Friday to take advantage of the price and shipping. Could not be happier. Very well built and very easy to build. Put the stand together by myself, no problem. Looking forward to many years of use. - Alex
Completely satisfied with this squat rack. It doesn't move (solid and well-built). I even started buying other Rogue products (flag-mat). Lost a total of 74 pounds since 2021. Currently, weigh 177Ibs, 6 feet (72 inches). Older find bodyweight training (pull-up bar) easier on the joints. Looking to get a Safety Squat Bar in the future for leg training. For a Complete Body Workout. - Bill
I bought this because leaving for the gym was becoming harder and harder. Now I don’t miss as many days as I used to. The stand is very stable when using a bar on it. I also use a rouge matador on it for dips. I did have to place two sandbags on the back, but it works great. - Lewis
I bought this shortly before the initial surge of binge home gym buying during the early phases of the pandemic. I’ve had this for over two years now. It is an amazing product! It is aesthetically pleasing, easy to install/transport, and sturdy and reliable. I purchased Safety Arms and J-Cups and added a Landmine to my Squad Stand. It is truly an amazing product, and I plan to own this until the day I die. Highly recommend it for those who seek a high-quality machine and don’t want to spend more than they need to. This Squat Stand can withstand the weight, even for heavy (er) lifting. - Andy
Easy to assemble and loads of use. Changed my workouts entirely. - Shane
I've been using it for about a month, and it lives up to expectations which were quite lofty. It's extremely solid and well-built. The one thing I will say is I didn't have the proper tools for assembly since the bolts have 1.5-inch heads, and you REALLY have to tighten them, or the uprights will move slightly, so make sure you get a socket if you don't have one. - Flounder
Rogue SML-2 Squat Stand: The Final Verdict
The Rogue SML-2 squat stand is a fantastic budget option for your garage or basement gym. The advantage is that it doesn’t take up much space and can even work for a room with a low ceiling, given its height.
There are some disadvantages, but the product is valuable for the money and will likely last you a lifetime if you take proper care of it.
